Assemblymember Juan Alanis saw success yesterday as two of his bills aimed at addressing homelessness and substance use issues passed through their respective policy committees with unanimous support.

Speaking about the first bill, AB 1817, which focuses on preventing homelessness among youth, Alanis stated, "AB 1817 is a common-sense measure that would require the Council to examine more than just homelessness." He emphasized the interconnected nature of issues such as homelessness, food insecurity, and unemployment that need to be addressed collectively.

Regarding the second bill, AB 1996, which aims to make naloxone hydrochloride more accessible in high-capacity public venues, Alanis expressed, "Addressing the opioid crisis has been one of my top priorities since I was elected." He highlighted the importance of ensuring that places like stadiums and amusement parks are equipped to handle opioid overdose emergencies.

Both bills received strong support in their respective committees, with AB 1817 passing the Assembly Human Services Committee with a 6-0 vote and AB 1996 passing through the Assembly Health Committee with a 16-0 vote. Moving forward, the bills will advance to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for further consideration.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, encompassing various communities in California.
